JIS v AA Drainaway

JIS had their first game under the guidance of Richard New and Pete Griffiths in the absence of gaffer Jake Henley, in Australia scouting a new striker, and AA Drainaway had a good reputation whilst JIS had a depleted squad, no McAteer, De Sando, Hunt or Tidy…….this however only turned to inspire the underperforming side to put in the most battling performance seen in years...

JIS started like a ball out of a cannon and Matano was literally bossing the front line, rolling back the years with a display of pure quality, every ball that was there to be won was, and all three early goals were through Matano, himself grabbing one and Jon O’Sullivan with a good finish and Griffiths keeping a cool head. AA pulled a goal back before half time when Stevens saved the initial shot only for the rebound to fall kindly to the striker with an empty net at his mercy. Half time saw a positive JIS side that were always going to tire after the way they had battled for every ball in the first half.

AA pulled a dubious goal back when Davidson appeared to be fouled only for the ref to wave play on and AA striker keeping a cool head to round Stevens and slot home, protests fell on deaf ears……if De Sando had have been playing the ref would have been in big trouble!! JIS turn it up a gear again and managed to make the lead 4-2 with yet another cool finish from Griffiths and then it was backs to the wall for the final 15 minutes. Stevens was forced into a snap parry from a stinging drive while Pitt, Graham and Davidson did a great job fending the aerial threat until with 5 minutes remaining a header from 10 yards out was saved by Stevens only for AA to yet again react first to the loose ball and make it 4-3……………..JIS hung on for a really well deserved victory. Special mention for Joe Matano who was leading by example and managed to keep everyone around him going for 90 minutes

Man of the Match: Joe Matano
