Is University Right for My Child?
Every year thousands of youngsters ask themselves the same question (except not applying to their children!) and it is a question we wrongly believe is black and white; either you go or you don’t. In reality there are so many options open to young people when they hit the tender age of 18, and it is about choosing the right route to go down.
Many youngsters feel compelled to go to uni thinking it’s the ‘only way to get a decent career’. In truth there are so many careers out there and many different routes into them. I for one went through college with my sights set on becoming a solicitor without knowing there was an alternative route to get there without university. It was only after college I found out about it.
High levels of debt is perhaps the biggest turn-off associated with university and with the average ‘debt sentence’ being 11 years it is no wonder your child may be put off by university, and you may now be thinking along the same lines! However tuition fees will be money well spent if your child is motivated and has aspirations after university. We see year after year students going through university on the wrong course or perhaps only at university because they couldn’t be bothered to get a job before. These are the people who will be complaining after graduation.
Like any parent, you naturally want the best for your child and you may believe university is the right way for them but they may feel otherwise. There are so many routes to go down and for some not going to university could lead to better prospects for your youngster than going through higher education.
NotGoingToUni is a site dedicated to helping students and parents discover the alternatives to university study and offering job opportunities for non-graduate students. There are so many careers tailored for youngsters with GCSEs, A-Levels and equivalent qualifications, and there are even opportunities to earn at the same time as achieving a degree thus avoiding debt altogether! Be sure to look at NotGoingToUni and pass it on to others who are in need of career guidance come 18.
