01/03/09 - Full Match Report

Having turned up at Pembroke Gardens with confidence sky high following the previous week’s 7-0 win, things started to go wrong from the off. It became apparent that there were 6 teams at the changing rooms, but only 2 pitches available! After several phone calls to the league and a chat with the groundsman, we headed off to Mordeon where we were pleasantly greeted by the groundsman there. “You can use the pitch, but you can’t use the changing rooms and you can put your own nets up!” All quality Sunday League stuff, makes you realise how lucky we are to play at the Defence Academy. What followed made you wish we hadn’t found a pitch! Before we knew it, we were 3-nil down. A dodgy penalty award started the slump, handball was apparently the offence, I’m sure I could hear Andy Gray commenting about the standard of refereeing! 2 goals followed and heads were down, the opposition were well up for it and we hadn’t got going. A change was made with Griffiths pulling back into the midfield and De Sando moving up front. The change paid instant reward with De Sando pulling a goal back before half time. After some honest words about the performance at half time, we entered the second half with some more life than the first. A slightly dubious goal from Rich New in his last game before having his leg amputated (at the request of his girlfriend) pulled it back to 3-2 and we were back in it. Unfortunately this served as a false dawn and we promptly capitulated to an embarrassing 5-2 defeat. The opposition celebrated like they’d won the league, we trudged off like we’d just been beaten by Oxford United.
