Finding a Job in Swindon
Finding a new job can be one of the hardest things you have to do, luckily there are lots of places that you can look for jobs, lots of information to read and lots of advice to be gained.
The first step is to think about the job you want to do, and importantly the job that you are qualified or experienced enough to do.
You then have many options.
Job Sites
Now obviously we would like to think Jobs in Swindon would be your first point of call, but there are others out there that may be able to help if we cannot.
In Swindon you have a couple of other choices; these are SwindonWeb Jobs and The Evening Advertiser Job section. Both of these have databases of jobs that are updated regularly.
There are obviously the national sites like Monster, Reed and Fish4Jobs too, these have thousands of jobs, and you just have to be prepared to do a bit of filtering to find jobs that are relevant.
News Papers
Local newspapers are a great source for finding jobs and in Swindon the main one to read is the Swindon Evening Advertiser. The "Adver" posts Swindon jobs on a Thursday, so this is the day to nip to the shop and pick up a copy. You are generally looking at 5-10 pages of jobs.
For more managerial or specialist roles the national newspapers might be of some use. These papers tend to vary the type of job each day, so it’s worth finding the right day for your career choice.
The Job Centre
If you are signing on for Jobseekers Allowance you will know the Job Centre and what is available. They have touch screen systems in there that have their national database of over 300,000 jobs. Obviously these will not all be jobs in Swindon but you will find some. These jobs are also accessible using their phone system -Jobseeker Direct – they have advisors who can offer details of job vacancies, send out application forms and arrange interviews. (0845 6969 234)
The Job Centre is also a great place to get help and assistance in your quest to the new career. They can give you advice on improving your CV, training schemes available and what jobs might be most suitable.
Employment Agencies
Employment or Recruitment agencies are organisations who recruit candidates on behalf of employers. They will generally advertise positions, then when you apply they will decide whether they feel you are right for the position and then put you forward to the interview process with the employer. As a side note, you should never have to pay a recruitment agency; they are normally paid when they place candidates, by the employers.
Swindon, like any major town these days has its fair share of agencies to choose from, and we have a comprehensive list that you can view on our Swindon Job Agencies page. Agencies will tend to either specialise in certain job types, i.e. temporary and contract, or they will be industry specific. If you venture into Swindon, take a walk down Commercial Road and you will see most of the agencies there.
The ideas above are by no means the definitive list of how to get a job, but hopefully it may help you to get going in the right direction. If there is anything that you think we should have here, or any Swindon specific tips, please get in touch with us and we will put it right!
Good luck with your search!
